March for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi !

Aung San Suu Kyi
Sentenced

Federation Square 4-6 pm
Saturday 6th June
Burma’s military dictatorship sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi today, extending her illegal detention. Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained for over 13 years. She was first placed under house arrest in 1989. Earlier this year the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention to be illegal under both international and Burmese law. Aung San Suu Kyi was charged with breaking the conditions of her illegal house arrest, after an uninvited US citizen allegedly visited her house. In effect, she has been prosecuted and sentenced because someone broke into her home.
The UN has said her detention is illegal and the international community, including the UN Security Council and Australia, have called for her immediate and unconditional release. Burma’s military dictators have not listened.
The verdict, continued harassment and detention of Aung San Suu Kyi demonstrates the regime’s ambitions to silence Burma’s greatest hope for freedom, peace and national reconciliation.
